Samsung Diversification........

Samsung electronics is diversifying into bio pharmaceuticals, South Korea’s largest conglomerate is going for joint venture with investment of around $264.4 million, this is a new venture for the firm, for this new venture the tech giant will partner with Quintile’s world's leading clinical research organization which has good experience in biopharmaceutical development, with this JV Samsung tends to produce bio therapeutics for treatment of cancer and arthritis.

Already there are some players which are operating in Biosimilar region from Korea, LG Electronics one of the competitor for Samsung went ahead many years back for biosimilar venture and have been very active since then India, China, Korea and South east Asia, There is still lot to happen in the APAC region in the biosimilar domain, though entry barrier is there, but outsourcing of some processes from the value chain is making it a effective domain for investment.

Another Merger...........

Beckman Coulter the name is synonymous to life sciences industry, every one of us who have been a biotechnology graduate would have used their centrifuges as I did in my ME days some six years back and later in my on job research. Yesterday there was announcement that Beckman will be acquired by home grown Denaher which is into pharma diagnostics, dental consumables rest other instrumentation and it is diversifying into the pharma segment with its foot prints specifically in the clinical diagnostics and instrumentation......the deal is estimated to be worth $6.8 Billion......diversification is the mantra for survival of the fittest.

Incredible City of Joy!!!

Today writing different thing from regular strategy blog I have been doing for long. My full childhood was spent in Andaman’s and in mainland when I see tour packages for Andaman’s worth INR 40, 000.....I just wonder that I used to travel to all those islands for free , even my travel from Chennai to Portblair used to be in INR 400 which includes food and then up gradation from bunk to first class and special service in dockyard as being daughter of Capt Choudhury ......loved every moment of his Charisma....miss him a lot .......have just one wish that would like to travel with my future man to all those places where I have been with my father....thoughts apart I have been staying in Kolkata for a while and though we have right to blame present government for inflation but in health care and agriculture sector in West Bengal saw a great change, pulse polio campaign has been a huge success and there has been improvement in quality of roads in Kolkata...as the traffic jams don't last long.......and as I am planning to go into agriculture after some years in our lands outskirts of Kolkata.....I am hearing a lot about initiatives taken by agriculture department for the farmers by the farmers.....good going.....I am proud to be part of incredible India with dusty roads, street food...

E. coli......

I love E.coli for many reasons first of all its the most friendly bacteria and also deadly .....i loved working with many strains while doing my on job research .....i literally used to smell the flask with cultures in latent phase and used to love doing growth curve studies.....after so many years writing the truth as my ex boss might used to feel that i never liked it......research gave me at most satisfaction.......will later after some years venture into it....in this week business world update there was article about my favorite bacteria being used for data storage upto 100 TB. Earlier in 2007 the experiment was carried out by Japanese scientists , later subsequent work is been done by their chinese counterparts....so i hope to use my favorite bacteria for data storage in coming future

Battle of Biological

The Battle is going on for Biological and their biosimilars, according to the manufacturers of Biological the bill passed by US congress allows them 12 years of data exclusivity and according to payers it 12 years of  market exclusivity and if we favor the manufacturers point of view then we will be denying the patients their right of cheap medication in the form of Biosimilars .......so in US till now innovator mono poly exists .......It’s good that we don't have price monopoly here in India.  I have been observing for long over the last two years Top 5 big pharma's are going for Biosimilar pathway .......I hope we might see some alteration in the rules for biosimilars in United States within 1-2 years.....

Diversification is the mantra........

Became pharmacist by fate but in business development and research by choice. Beginning of 2011 two major mergers by two of the top five pharma, each worth more than or around $400 millions, first was Pfizer's deal with Theraclone for infectious diseases and cancer. The other one being Novartis this week which went for cancer diagnostic deal with Genoptix......point to note is Pfizer for long is trying to filln its dry pipeline to sustain the number one position and Novartis knows to survive it has to keep on diversifying its portfolio...as Biomarkers will be the hot spot and major revenue generators for lifestyle diseases in the coming decades.

Dupont into Enzymes Business....

DuPont a company which I have always admired as a kid as I knew that this was the company which created the Teflon technology for our house hold non-stick utensils.....Yesterday there was update for DuPont acquisition of Danisco, this enzyme company is one innovator company in enzyme technology after Novozymes .....The enzyme industry has been a duplody segment for a long time, after this acquisition by DuPont, it will help DuPont to diversify but Novozyme has a tough competition in the coming 2-3 years.
